I thought it would be fun to answer some questions that reveal more of who I am than the usual. Some are about me as an artist and some of me as a person. Hopefully this Q&A is just the right amount of TMI!
IF I WEREN’T AN ARTIST, I WOULD BE . . . sad! It’s all I’ve ever wanted to be. I can’t imagine being anything else.
BEST CAREER ADVICE I’VE GOTTEN . . . don’t compare yourself to others. Every artist has their own style. Follow yours and don’t give up.
THREE QUALITIES THAT HELP ME BE AN ARTIST . . . curiosity, passion, and vulnerability
FAVORITE PERK OF THE JOB . . . not having a set schedule and getting to make each day what I want it or need it to be.
WORST PITFALL OF THE JOB . . . solitude
ONE OF MY FAVORITE ARTISTS IS . . . Vincent Van Gogh. He’s so much more than the guy who cut off his ear (which is greatly exaggerated).
ON MY BUCKET LIST . . . perfecting the pain au chocolat Parisian style
ONE THING I AM EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD AT . . . laughing
ONE THING I AM EXCEPTIONALLY BAD AT . . . alphabetizing. Still sing the song in my head to make sure I’ve got it right.
ALL-TIME FAVORITE ART MATERIAL(S) . . . Crayola crayons! Every time I walk past a box, I take a good sniff of them.
HOW I CLEAR MY MIND AFTER A CHALLENGING DAY . . . Either reading, watching mindless television, or sketching. Depends on just HOW challenging it was.
THE KIND OF WORK I’D DO FOR FREE . . . I would read books. All. Day. Long.
LAST THING I BINGE WATCHED . . . Ozark season 2. That Jason Bateman has a real future.
A BOOK THAT LEFT A LASTING IMPRESSION ON ME . . . I’m such a book nerd that it’s hard to pick one, so I picked two. Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston (which has nothing to do with God) and Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, one of my absolute favorite authors ever.
FAVORITE ART MUSEUM . . . The Louvre is amazing, but I am partial to The Art Institute of Chicago. It’s in my hometown and a world class museum. The depth of work is truly incredible.
MOST MEMORABLE ART EXPERIENCE . . . seeing the sketches of the four masters - DaVinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Donatello - in a special exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago when I was 18. It changed my life and I wish I could find where they are and view them again.
ART MEDIUM I WANT TO TRY . . . I’ve always wanted to jump into the 3D arena so throwing clay to make pots, bowls, etc. I have a slight addiction to vessels.
I’D CONSIDER TRADING MY TALENT IF I COULD . . . sing! Like really sing. The way Sia or Pink can belt out a song with incredible power and passion.
